There were 200 brave souls who sailed on the Hector in 1773 looking to make a new home in a new world. Of those who sailed there were 189 passengers, 10-11 crew members (exact number not known), consisting of 33 families, 25 single men and 70 children. Thirty of those children were under the age of 2 years. The first 10 passengers boarded the Ship Hector at Greenock, Scotland. The Ship Hector then sailed to Loch Broom to pick up the remaining passengers.
One of the most interesting and sought after exhibits in the Interpretive Centre is the Passenger List. One interesting fact was that this list was not drawn up to the day the passengers bought their pass, or the day they boarded or the day that they arrived in Pictou. It was drawn up 50 years after the Hector arrived in Nova Scotia. Will MacKay was a 10yr old boy on the ship and to commemorate the 50th Anniversary, he and some of the town's people sat down and drew up the list.
