The Fisheries Training Pool was officially opened in May 1980 as a joint effort between the Department of Fisheries and the Town of Pictou. The Department of Recreation and Parks currently manages the pool and aquatic programs. The pool is 25 meters long and 15 meters wide with water depth varying from 1 meter to 3.8 meters. Many popular original programs continue today. For example, the Mariners Swim Team, who started in 1980, still train at the pool 5 days a week. There are many programs for kids, adults, and seniors. Visit us for open swims or rent the pool.

Red Cross Swim Lessons

We are pleased to offer the Red Cross Swim Program at the Fisheries Pool. The Canadian Red Cross has been a leader in Swimming and Water Safety for over 60 years and continues to renew and refine their Learn to Swim program to meet the growing needs of Canadians.
Red Cross Swim Kids
Pre-school, 1 & 2 $65.00/half hour session
Level 3 and up $80.00/hour session

Front Crawl Workshop (Ages 6-12)

GET ACTIVE - GRADE 5
Calling all Grade 5 students attending McCulloch Education Centre. Beginning in October you will receive FREE admission to the pool for the Friday and Saturday open swims, 7:30-9:00pm.

The 100km Club & 50km Challenge
Challenge yourself! Adult lane swimmers can track their lengths and become a member of the “100 km Club”. Fun prizes to be awarded along the way. For youth try the “50km track your distance, challenge your buddy!
Adult Swim Lessons
Whether you are scared stiff or wish to improve your strokes, this swim instruction session is designed to meet the individual needs of each participant. The next session September 12; the program runs for 8 weeks. The fee is $10 pay as you go or $75. Pool is closed the evening of October 31
Splash N’ Play Swim (Parent and Tot)
A fun time for Moms, Dads and Caregivers. Tuesdays 10:30-11:00 am except during the summer.
Aqua Turbo with Darlene
A high intensity class! It focuses on building cardiovascular strength and endurance through challenging routines of intervals and higher intensity options. You will keep your heart rate and pace up throughout the class and learn to train in both aerobic and anaerobic zones. Provides a definite challenge for veterans and avid participants. Every Monday except during the summer, 7:00-8:00 pm.
Aquafit and Arthritis Fitness Classes
Fun, Fitness and Friendship. Come and join us in the water. Work at your own pace. Structured to fit your fitness needs. Bring a friend, or come and meet a new one. Have fun and get fit. Check our pool schedule. We’d love to see you. Also available Youth Aquafit (14 yrs+).
Arthritis Fitness Class with Aqua Yoga
Aqua Yoga is a gentle and very low impact aquatic activity. With the release of gravity, the body is able to find the optimum stretch. By using the rhythem of the breath an inner sense of relaxation can be achived. Aqua Ygoa strengthens and tones the body whilst relieving tensions and renewing energy. Arthritis/Yoga classes are held on Monday and Wednesday from 11:00 am—12:00 pm except during the summer.
Birthday Parties & Pool Rentals: give us a call for details.....we will look after everything....all you need to do is show up and have some fun!! Pool Rentals will be available in the late afternoon or early evening hours. Contact the ‘pool’ for details.

Red Cross Babysitters Course offers basic first aid and care giving skills for youth 11-15 years old. Participants learn how to provide care to younger children in a variety of age groups, and how to prevent and respond to emergencies. Pre-registration is required, course fee $40. First Aid Courses
Does your business need a First Aid Course? We can come to you or you can come to us. Emergency or Standard First Aid, all levels of CPR and AED training. Call us to set up a time.
Bronze Medallion and Bronze Cross Course - Participants must be at least 13 years of age and committed to putting in the times and effort it requires: 100% attendance is required. Preregistration is required. NEXT COURSE: TBA
Participants develop problem solving and decision making skills individually and in partners. Candidates learn CPR and develop lifesaving skills needed to be their own lifeguard. Participants must be at least 11 years of age. NEXT COURSE: TBA
A Lifesaving Society course that teaches an understanding of the lifesaving principles embodied in the 4 components of water rescue - judgement, knowledge, skill and fitness. Rescuers learn tows and carries, defence methods and releases in preparation for challenging rescues involving both conscious and unconscious victims. Prerequisite: Minimum 13 years of age or Bronze Star certification. Pre-registration is required. Course Fee $185.00

National Lifeguard Service (includes Standard First-Aid, CPR “C”, AED)
Must have Br. Cross (need not be current). Must be 16 by exam. This is an intense 56 hour course that will prepare you for the job of lifeguard.
HIGH SCHOOL CREDITS:
Notice to Grade 10, 11 and 12 students. Beginning in the 2013-14 school year, the Department of Education had added Leadership Training through the Nova Scotia Lifesaving Society as an elective for earning 1 credit. The Leadership Training consists of 110 hours of leadership course in Bronze Medallion, Bronze Cross, National Lifeguard, Learn to Swim Instructor and Lifesaving Instructor. Contact your Guidance Councillor or Pictou Aquatics for further information.
