Volunteering in Pictou

There are hundreds of opportunities to volunteer in the Town of Pictou. Whether you are interested in sports, events, gardening, or history there is something for you. Volunteering gives you an opportunity to get involved in your community, to make new friends, to learn new skills, and gain experience for school and work.

Pictou Recreation and Parks Committee

Pictou Recreation and Parks Department is guided by a standing committee comprised of community members and Council representatives. The committee defines result areas for the department in accordance with the Town of Pictou vision and makes recommendations to Council on matters concerning recreation, parks and facilities. Other activities of the Committee include assisting in organizing community events, such as Winter Carnival, Christmas Light-Up, annual Volunteer Award Reception, and special projects. If citizens are interested in volunteering on the PRP Committee or for specific events we encourage you to find out more information by contacting Michelle Young at 485-4372. In the Fall 2011 the PRPC Committee will be looking for new Board Members. If interested please call with your contact information.

Welcome to Pictou County

There are ways that you or someone you know can help to make newcomers to Pictou County feel welcome…..Volunteers are needed for a program called "Friend to Friend Matches."  Volunteers are matched one on one (same sex) with an immigrant newcomer. The two people get together for a few hours a week to do things of common interest or need – go to lunch, go to the mall, explore a grocery store, look at cars for sale, etc.  The commitment is for 6 months.  It is important to help newcomers feel welcome and included in our community, so if you or someone you know, would be interested in being a friend to someone from another county, please call Wendy Hughes at 752-0202 for more information or email her at wendy_hughes@ymca.ca
