The Fisheries Training Pool was officially opened in May 1980 as a joint effort between the Department of Fisheries and the Town of Pictou. The Department of Recreation and Parks currently manages the pool and aquatic programs. The pool is 25 meters long and 15 meters wide with water depth varying from 1 meter to 3.8 meters. Many popular original programs continue today. For example, the Mariners Swim Team, who started in 1980, still train at the pool 5 days a week. There are many programs for kids, adults, and seniors. Visit us for open swims or rent the pool.

For more information on recreational opportunities visit:

 Pool features include:

  • 1 & 3 meter diving boards
  • Tarzan rope
  • Shallow water slide
  • Water Basketball Nets
  • Red Cross National Lifeguards on deck
  • Accessible Chair Lift & Aqua Wheelchair and adaptable life vests available
  • New accessible universal changeroom onsite.

Pictou Recreation Aquatics has offered Red Cross Swim lessons in our community for over 50 years.

What to Expect On Your Visit

The safety of visitors and staff is a priority. The pool will have a progressive phased opening. The operations will follow guidelines set forth by the Lifesaving Society for the reopening of aquatic facilities. Many measures are being taken to ensure your safety:

  • Reduced capacity & phased programming
  • Enhanced cleaning schedule including sanitation measures between programs
  • Sanitizer stations and plexiglass protection
  • Continuing visitor and staff screening measures including contact tracing procedures
  • Enhanced staff training program

Your visit to the pool will have a few changes in place to provide a safe and enjoyable experience for all:

  • On every visit, you will experience health screening at the reception desk
  • Please remember your mask; masks are required in common areas (not in the water)
  • Proof of vaccination is mandatory.

 Proof of Vaccination:

On October 4th, we went into Phase 5 of the Province of Nova Scotia Reopening Plan. It is now required to show proof of double vaccination when attending all non-essential recreational activities. This will include programs and facilities managed by Pictou Recreation and Parks.
Here is what to expect:
- When you arrive to the program you will have to show Pictou Recreation and/or Aquatic Staff your proof of double vaccination.
- Proof of vaccination can be shown on a cell phone or paper copy.
- You only need proof of vaccination once upon registration or attendance at a program. For drop in programming you may be required to show proof of vaccination more than once. For example public swims.
It is recommended to always carry proof of vaccination when attending all programs and facilities managed through Pictou Recreation and Parks.
If you are not double vaccinated:
You are kindly asked to not attend a recreation program or visit the Pictou Fisheries Pool until you have received your second dose of vaccine and are able to show proof.
REMEMBER: When attending recreational programs and facilities indoors you will still be required to wear a mask until the activity begins, for example exercising or swimming.
We appreciate your cooperation as we continue to navigate this together. Please stay healthy and safe, and we look forward to seeing you soon.
