Policing
- Details
- Published: Wednesday, 28 October 2020 16:50
Since 1932, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police has been providing policing services to the Town of Pictou. The RCMP are dedicated to preserving the peace and protecting the lives and property of the residents of this community.
As part of Canada's national police force, the Pictou Detachment of the RCMP is committed to promoting safe homes and communities.
The Pictou Office of the Pictou County District R.C.M.P. is located at 38 Caladh Ave, in Pictou across from the Hector Heritage Quay. It officially opened Oct. 2, 1998, and houses both a municipal and rural unit. Officers also patrol Pictou Harbour and the Northumberland Strait in the detachment's Boston Whaler.
Community-based policing initiatives over the past number of years have resulted in a changing role and relationship between the district members and Pictou's citizens. Members of the district are active in the traditional policing role and have become more integrated with the community by being involved in various community groups, events, and endeavours.
To commemorate the 125th anniversary of the Force, a tartan specific to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police was approved and designed in 1998. The rich and symbolic colours of the Tartan are taken from the Force's uniform and badge.
The year 2022 signifies the 90th Anniversary of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police providing policing services to the residents of Nova Scotia and the maritime provinces.
